What makes Camp Winaukee so special?
Winaukee is more than a premium boys' sports camp. It is more than a spectacular location on Lake Winnipesaukee. It is a culture of good values that is passed down from generation to generation. The Winaukee community embraces a core philosophy set forth on the six branches of the Winaukee "Tree of Values": Enthusiasm, Loyalty, Sportsmanship, Friendship, Achievement and Cooperation. These values are instilled in Winaukee campers through a sports and adventure program and unique traditions that have been at the heart of Winaukee's 85 year history. In the words of one 11-year-old camper,

"The Tree of Values is a life lesson; it prepares you for the real world."

Winaukee campers feel that they are part of something special, meaningful and bigger than themselves. It was not surprising to hear another camper's spontaneous expression: "Winaukee is in my soul."

Why choose Winaukee over a camp closer to home?
Camp Winaukee's location is spectacular, on 2.5 miles of shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New England, surrounded by the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What could be better! With warm days and cool nights, the weather is ideal for summer activities, and the fresh mountain air and low humidity enhance all sporting activities.

Because of our traditional New England camp location, Winaukee attracts campers from all over the country as well as from overseas. This allows campers to meet and become friends with boys from beyond their own neighborhood. They all choose Winaukee because they share a desire to learn new sports, improve their skills and try their hand at many new and exciting activities.

Who are the directors?
Winaukee is directed by Bart Sobel and Jeff "Freedo" Freedman, both of whom have a long history in camping and a passion for working with children.Bart Sobel continues a family tradition established in 1934 by his father "Doc" Sobel. Bart grew up at Winaukee as a camper and staff member. In 1981, he succeeded his father as a year-round director of Camp Winaukee. Previously, Bart was a Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in educational philosophy.Jeff Freedman, known affectionately as "Freedo", directs the Island Camp and is responsible for staff recruitment. Freedo was a longtime camper at Winaukee and received the "All Around Camper Award" in 1979. He was a collegiate NCAA All-American athlete. Before joining the Winaukee team in 1999 "Freedo" worked as a lawyer for the NCAA.

What is the advantage of having a mainland and an island camp?
Winaukee has two separate facilities and programs, offering all of our campers an intimacy of a small camp setting with the breadth and diversity of programming of a larger camp. The Mainland Camp, for boy's ages 7 through 12, offers a nurturing and structured program , where boys receive quality sports instruction and partake in exciting trips designed especially for younger campers. Winaukee Island Camp is located on a private island just off the Mainland. There, our teenage boys participate in athletics and trip programs. Each campus is self-contained and features separate athletic facilities, waterfront, dining hall, theater and fleet of boats. Although the two camps are separate, Mainland and Island brothers and cousins visit weekly.

How does the program work?
Winaukee offers a program that is age-appropriate. The day is divided into six activity periods, three in the morning and three in the afternoon. The youngest boys are assigned five of their activities each day thus ensuring that they receive instruction in a variety of land and water sports and hobbies. Our youngest campers also have a structured elective period during which they can choose from six to eight, pre-selected activities. Campers entering 4th, 5th and 6th grade have four scheduled periods and two elective choices each day. Mainland campers (those entering 2nd to 7th grades) receive daily swim instruction.

As campers get older, they are given more choice. With guidance from the Island director and key staff, Island campers choose their own program, to meet their interests and goals.

Campers participate in inter-camp tournaments with camps in the vicinity. Our goal is for campers to participate and to have fun. There are no try-outs or A and B teams. Every boy has the opportunity to play!

Describe the facilities at camp.
Top-notch facilities enable us to offer a wide-variety of land and water sports, outdoor adventure activities and hobbies. Our lush green fields are irrigated with underground sprinklers, and we have numerous age-appropriate courts and fields for soccer, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, street hockey and volleyball. The Sobel Indoor Sports Arena enhances the athletic program, rain or shine! Eighteen professional quality tennis courts provide ample opportunity for lessons and competition. Individual pursuits are enjoyed on the archery range, golf driving range and mini-golf course. Island campers have their own physical fitness and training center. The jewel in Winaukee's crown is beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee, where campers swim, waterski, sail, kayak, canoe, fish, or take a lake cruise to places of interest on the "Hubba-Hubba", our own 26-foot cruiser. All waterfront activities are carefully supervised by Red Cross certified staff. Winaukee offers many hobbies, including horseback riding, fishing, photography, astronomy, arts and crafts, music and theater. Campers also have the opportunity to hike, mountain bike and go on extended trips in the surrounding White Mountains.

We combine the best of tradition with the most modern facilities. Our cabins have been completely renovated, and we have recently built new shower houses on both campuses. Our grounds are well groomed, and the views at Winaukee are spectacular!

What special events and trips are offered?
Exciting special events and evening activities round out the program. Evening activities include sports leagues, campfires, and special events such as Carnival, bowling, movies and lake excursions. Sunday at Winaukee is special event day. The Mainland camp is divided into four teams, and campers spend the day engaged in friendly competition before ending the day with a campfire, skits, fun and games!

Off campus trips are memorable summer highlights. Each age group is scheduled for age-appropriate out-of-camp excursions, which may include canoe and sailing trips on the lake; hiking adventures throughout the White Mountains; tours of Boston and Cape Cod; and exploration of the Maine coast, Arcadia National Park and Kennebunkport. Island campers enjoy a five day trip to Montreal and Quebec and have the option to take extended golf trips.

What makes our staff unique?
Winaukee staff members develop a lifelong connection to camp, and 70% of our staff return for the following summer, unusual for a boys' sports camp that hires specialists. Winaukee's key staff consists of high school and college coaches and teachers, with an average tenure of 15 summers at Winaukee. Key staff members and program heads provide excellent instruction and supervision. Winaukee's cabin counselors are college students and young teachers. All are specialists in a particular sport or activity. However, they are hired as much for their ability to relate to, supervise and lead our campers as for their sports and activity skills. There are no junior counselors or Counselors in Training (C.I.T.'s) on staff, and we maintain a 3:1 camper to counselor ratio to ensure personal attention for every boy.

How is the food?
Our chefs have been preparing healthy and nutritious meals for Winaukee campers for many years and have designed menus that appeal to our boys. We offer a variety of nutritious and well-prepared selections, and alternatives are available at every meal. A breakfast bar offers a variety of cereals, fruit, yogurt and other delicious items, in addition to a hot, home-cooked entrée. Two large salad bars and a daily pasta selection are offered along with the entrée at both lunch and dinner. At least twice a week, we move dinner outdoors to the lakeside picnic area for a barbecue. We also vary the menu with weekly theme dinners, including Italian, Asian, Mexican, Western, and a beach party Luau! Snacks during the day and at bedtime include fresh fruit, home made cookies and ice cream. Winaukee accommodates campers with food allergies.

Are there opportunities to socialize with girls from nearby camps?
Socials are held throughout the summer with our two sister camps – Robindel and Wicosuta – throughout the summer. The number and format of the socials vary by age group, and include beach parties, barbeques and sports days. Weekly visits are scheduled for campers with sisters at Robindel and Wicosuta.

What does Winaukee do to make our new campers feel welcome?
We recognize that every boy is unique, and so our directors work closely with each new family to ensure that each new camper is placed in the appropriate cabin. In order to get to know and understand each boy as an individual, one of our directors meets in person (where possible) with every boy who is planning to attend Winaukee. In order to gain additional insight, we send parents an interest questionnaire which elicits information about each new camper. One of the directors speaks with every new family to review the questionnaire and to discuss our recommendations for a compatible bunk placement. In addition, before the summer begins, each group leader contacts every new camper in his group to welcome him and to answer any questions. Our two "Camp Moms" pay special attention to our youngest campers who may need help with personal hygiene or adjustment to camp. The bunk unit is important at Winaukee. We go all out to make sure that our new campers develop great friendships by sharing wonderful, positive camp experiences.

Does Winaukee offer shorter sessions
Because some younger campers and their parents may not be comfortable with the full 7 week program, we also offer a 5-week July program. Campers that choose our July option may elect to stay for the remainder of the summer. For families thinking about sleep away camp for next summer, we offer a two-week "Introduction to Sleep Away Camp". Campers enjoy all of our facilities and experience all the activities that we offer. The two-week camp is an ideal preparation for attendance at camp the following summer. This program takes place in August and ends at the same time as the regular summer season.

How do the boys get to camp?
Round-trip coach bus transportation, supervised by Winaukee staff members, is available from Manhattan, Northern New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester and Connecticut. Winaukee staff members escort campers on flights to and from Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Florida and Los Angeles. Campers traveling from abroad are met by a senior staff member at Logan Airport in Boston or Manchester Airports in New Hampshire, and are escorted to their departing flights at the end of camp. Parents may also drive their sons to camp.

How do I communicate with my son during camp?
We schedule parent phone calls on specific days throughout the summer. Each camper is required to write home at least three times per week, and we ask that parents write or email as frequently as possible. Emails are printed and delivered daily. Parents have access to our secure website where we post pictures of camp activities.

Who will take care of my child if he gets sick or is injured?
Camp Winaukee's health care staff consists of 5 Registered Nurses, 3 on the Mainland and 2 on the Island, and a physician who lives at camp. We have arrangements with local medical specialists, dentists and orthodontists who will treat our boys if necessary.

The health center is open 24-hours a day. Sick call is held after breakfast and dinner, but campers who are ill are treated at the health center 24 hours a day. Children receive routine medications at mealtimes and bedtime according to the documentation on their health history.

How do I get more information about Camp Winaukee?
We encourage interested families to meet with a Winaukee director and to enroll early in the year, while space is still available.

For families interested for the following summer, we suggest a tour while camp is in session. Nothing beats seeing camp in action!

Feel free to contact us by phone or email if you have any questions, as well as to make an appointment for a tour or to meet with a Winaukee director.
